The idea of a capsule wardrobe gets talked about a lot in Western fashion circles. But translating it to the Indian context (our climate range, our occasions, our relationship with colour) requires a different approach.
Here's an honest starting point: 10 pieces that actually work in urban India.
The 10 Pieces
- 2–3 heavyweight plain tees (black, white, off-white): the foundation. Everything else pairs against these.
- 1–2 statement graphic tees: pieces with meaning. Not trend. Not logo. Something that reflects who you actually are.
- 1 good sweatshirt: for Bangalore weather, December in Delhi, or just October evenings anywhere. 300+ GSM, something you'd reach for automatically.
- 2 pairs of trousers (one casual, one slightly elevated): wide-leg or relaxed fit works best with oversized tops.
- 1 pair of jeans: straight cut, dark wash. Goes with everything.
- 1 outer layer: an unstructured jacket or coach jacket for transitions.
The Indian Climate Problem
India's climate range is extreme. What works in Bangalore doesn't work in Delhi January. A true minimal wardrobe here needs to be layerable: pieces that can be worn alone in summer and stacked in winter.
Oversized fits help enormously here. A heavyweight oversized tee worn alone in October works layered under an open overshirt in December.
What to Avoid
Avoid buying cheap basics as "placeholders." They almost always stick around longer than intended, take up physical and mental space, and get replaced, so you end up buying twice. Spend more on the 3–4 pieces you'll reach for every week.
Where Graphic Tees Fit In
The mistake people make with graphic tees in a minimal wardrobe is treating them as add-ons. They're not. A well-chosen graphic tee is a signal piece. It says something specific about who you are without requiring you to say it out loud.
Pick two or three that genuinely resonate. Ignore the rest.
