Oversized t-shirts have gone from a trend to a staple. But in a market flooded with options (from ₹299 fast fashion to ₹2,000 "premium" pieces), knowing what you're actually buying matters more than ever.
This is an honest breakdown of what separates a great oversized tee from one that loses its shape after three washes.
1. GSM: The Number That Matters Most
GSM (grams per square metre) tells you how heavy the fabric is. For oversized tees, the sweet spot is 180–240 GSM. Too light (under 160 GSM) and the tee clings, turns see-through, and loses structure fast. Too heavy (over 260 GSM) and it stops feeling like a tee and starts feeling like a sweatshirt.
Most fast fashion brands don't publish their GSM. That's usually a sign it's low.
2. Cotton Composition: 100% or Blended?
100% cotton breathes better in Indian weather, which matters when you're wearing something oversized. Polyester blends can feel cheaper, pill faster, and hold sweat smell. For daily wear in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi heat, pure cotton is the better call.
3. The Shoulder Seam Test
For an oversized fit to look intentional rather than accidental, the shoulder seam should sit at or slightly past your actual shoulder, not halfway down your arm. If the seam is falling off your shoulder, the tee is too large, not oversized.
4. Pre-Shrunk vs Not Pre-Shrunk
Indian washing machines are aggressive. If a brand doesn't specify pre-shrunk, assume the tee will shrink 1–2 sizes after the first few washes. Always ask or check the product specs before buying.
5. Prints: Water-Based vs Plastisol
Graphic tees live and die by their prints. Plastisol (plastic-based) prints crack and peel over time. Water-based prints breathe with the fabric, stay softer, and last significantly longer. If a brand doesn't mention print type, it's almost certainly plastisol.
